The afternoon I took these photographs was a day of true sudden enlightenment. It was December 21, 2016. The afternoon of Solstice. The pasture in The Meadow was clear enough of growth for me to take a long walk. The cattle had settled elsewhere. I took the first photo, looked at it, and thought: “This is all I am. A shadow on the earth.” Oddly that wasn’t a sad thought. It was a realistic one. In all our lives, no matter how long, compared to the earth, we are but shadows passing across it. We may focus on ourselves. But everything around us is more brilliant than we are.
